ROLAND SCHLIMME

Roland Schlimme works independently in film and music, primarily editing documentary features as well as shorts and gallery pieces, with a focus on unscripted, unconventional films.

He studied film at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, and (after working in production) began editing with the digital transition in the 1990s. He has edited more than 25 feature documentaries along with numerous dramatic, performance, and more experimental pieces.

Roland’s formal sensibility and intuitive touch can be recognized in the works of Peter Mettler (Gambling, Gods, and LSD, Petropolis, The End of Time), Jennifer Baichwal (Manufactured Landscapes, Long Time Running, Anthropocene), Phillip Barker, Laura Taler, Cliff Caines, and others. His credits include editing, writing, music and sound composition, and his work has premiered around the world (TIFF, HotDocs, Venice, IDFA, Sundance, etc.) reaching audiences of millions through festivals, theatrical releases, TV broadcast, streaming, and intimate gallery settings.

While he works primarily in his studio in Toronto, editing has taken him to Switzerland, New York, Montréal, Victoria, and Buenos Aires.

Roland continues to support emerging filmmakers and editors through mentorship and in formal settings. Since 2010, he has consulted, presented lectures, and taught creative editing courses to undergraduates at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). In 2014 he was invited to lecture and supervise a workshop for the prestigious DOC Institute Masters’ Series in Toronto. In 2018 he began The Editor’s Guide to Film History, an ongoing series of articles articulating the theory and practice of film editing.
